Led Zeppelin ha sigut un dels grans grups de la història del rock, i sens dubte un dels que major influència ha exercit davant grups posteriors. Cançons com Inmigrant Song, Kashmir o Whole Lotta Love han passat a l'història com a grans del gènere. Però entre tots els èxits de Led Zeppelin en destaca un: Stairway to Heaven.
Stairway to Heaven és una cançó del grup de rock britànic Led Zeppelin, composada per el guitarrista Jimmy Page i el cantant Robert Plant i inclosa en el quart treball d'estudi de la banda, Led Zeppelin IV. Està considerada per molts com un dels punts culminants de la història del rock. És una de las cançons més solicitadas en les emisores de ràdio dels EE. UU., encara que no s'ha publicat mai en "single". L'enorme èxit de la cançó i la negativa de la banda a editar aquesta cançó en "single" ha contribuït a que Led Zeppelin IV siga un dels àlbums més venuts de la història. No està clar si el títol de la cançó està inspirat en el títol d'una pel·lícula. En les famoses revistes Guitar World i Rolling Stone, el "solo" de guitarra en La menor creat per Jimmy Page per a aquesta canço fou elegit com el millor de la història, també la marca de instruments Gibson col·locà aquest com el millor en sa llista de "Els millors 50 "solos" de la història".
Famoses grabacions de interpretacions d'aquesta cançó s'han fet en el Live Aid de 1985 i en el quadragèsim aniversari d'Atlantic Records en 1988, i una versió instrumental en el concert de Crossroads juntament Eric Clapton i Jeff Beck entre altres músics.
És una cançó relativament poc versionada per altres intérprets. No obstant, una de las versions més destacades és de Frank Zappa, realitzada en els estils de reggae/ska, inclosa en el seu àlbum "The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life".
El periòdic nord-americà New York Post publicà en juliol de 2007 una llista amb les 100 millors versions de la història, en la que destacava la versió que Dolly Parton realitzà de "Stairway to Heaven" en el primer lloc, i la gravada per el duo mexicà Rodrigo i Gabriela en el lloc 98.
